Purpose of processing
Smoothing is a wet operation, intermediate between the raising and topping processes, which
it is carried out to fix, polish and direct the surface of fabrics with pile of various lengths.
Execution of processing
Despite the simplicity of the operation, the operator must in any case ensure that:
the fabric is wetted evenly;
no creases are formed during processing, a defect that would be accentuated by rolling
of the piece;
the rolling is uniform, with the selvedges wrapped around themselves with constant tension throughout
the length of the pieces.
It must also regulate, in relation to the fabric to be smoothed, the pressure of the brushes and of the
squeezing cylinders.

Most recurring defects
Irregular wetting on the fabric, both before and after squeezing, can lead to a
different sheen of the hair.
Since this is a wide-ranging process, it is good practice to check that the draft is regular and perfect
fabric, both in and out of the machine.
